The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) has deepened its collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) ahead of a major welfare outreach for police families in Lagos, in a move aimed at expanding access to healthcare and social support services.

POWA President, Mrs Olufunmilola Disu, disclosed this while receiving a high-level delegation of the nursing association at the POWA office in Abuja, describing the engagement as a strategic step towards strengthening healthcare delivery within police communities.

The delegation, led by NANNM National President, Comrade Haruna Mamman, comprised senior executives of the association who deliberated on modalities to support the upcoming POWA Cares Initiative in Lagos.

The Lagos outreach, scheduled for later this month, marks the second phase of the nationwide programme designed to improve the health, economic stability and overall well-being of police families.

Speaking during the meeting, Disu stressed the importance of partnerships in achieving large-scale impact, noting that the success recorded during the first phase of the initiative in Abuja underscored the need for structured welfare interventions.

According to her, over 1,000 beneficiaries received free eye screening, treatment and basic medical consultations during the Abuja outreach, with many reporting improved productivity and enhanced quality of life.

“As nurses, we understand what it means to care beyond the surface. This partnership allows us to extend that care to the families of those who protect our nation,” she said.

She added that the collaboration with NANNM is “critical to delivering quality, people-centred care,” emphasising that the effectiveness of police officers is closely tied to the well-being of their families.

Building on the gains of the first phase, Disu revealed that the Lagos edition would expand beyond healthcare services to include broader support initiatives, such as scholarships for 10 children of police officers to study nursing, aimed at promoting educational inclusion and strengthening the healthcare workforce pipeline.

In his remarks, Mamman commended POWA for its commitment to improving the welfare of police families and pledged the association’s support towards ensuring the success of the Lagos outreach.

The meeting also addressed concerns over the increasing prevalence of unlicensed medical practitioners, with both organisations agreeing on the need for stronger collaboration to safeguard public health and uphold professional standards.

The Lagos outreach is expected to bring together healthcare professionals and key stakeholders to deliver integrated support services to police families across the state.
