Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Rema, emerged as the biggest winner at the 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), held on Sunday night at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the singer clinched the prestigious Artiste of the Year award, further cementing his status as one of Africa’s leading music stars. He also won Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Best African Artiste, Duo or Group in African RnB & Soul, completing a remarkable triple triumph on the night.

Rema’s wins crowned a vibrant ceremony that celebrated African music excellence across regional and continental categories, attracting top artistes, music executives and cultural stakeholders from across the continent and beyond.

Other major winners included Burna Boy, whose project No Sign of Weakness bagged Album of the Year, while Shallipopi’s “Laho” claimed Song of the Year. Veteran rapper Phyno won Best African Artiste, Duo or Group in African Hip Hop.

In the regional awards, Singuila of Congo emerged Best Male Artiste in Central Africa, with Cindy Le Coeur of DR Congo winning the female category. Jux of Tanzania and Denise of Madagascar claimed the male and female honours in Eastern Africa, while Team Paiya of Côte d’Ivoire won Best African Duo, Group or Band.

Northern Africa saw Adviser of Mauritania take Best Male Artiste, while Egypt’s Sherine won Best Female Artiste. In Southern Africa, Yo Maps of Zambia and South Africa’s Nontokozo Mkhize emerged winners in the male and female categories respectively.

Rema also topped the Western Africa category as Best Male Artiste, while Ghana’s Wendy Shay won Best Female Artiste.

In the continental awards, Milo and Morijah, both from Côte d’Ivoire, won Best Male and Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music respectively. Guinea’s Manamba Kanté secured Best African Artiste in African Pop, while Benin Republic’s Axel Merryl won Best African Contemporary Artiste.

Yemi Alade claimed Best Soundtrack for You Are, Senegal’s Bakhaw Dioum won Songwriter of the Year, and South Africa’s Ciza took home Breakout Artiste of the Year. Nigeria’s Qing Madi was named Most Promising Artiste of the Year.

The ceremony also celebrated collaboration, with Shallipopi and Burna Boy’s “Laho” winning Best African Collaboration.

Overall, the 9th AFRIMA Awards highlighted Africa’s rich musical diversity and global influence, with Rema’s outstanding performance standing out as the defining moment of the night.
