The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike to press home its long-standing demands from the Federal Government.

The association’s president, Dr Mohammad Suleiman, confirmed the development in a statement released on Saturday via NARD’s official X handle.

Suleiman explained that the decision followed the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government and the latter’s repeated failure to implement agreements reached after several meetings, appeals, and warnings.

“We wish to address you at this critical time as we embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike — a decision that did not come lightly, nor was it ever our desire,” the statement read in part.

“We are fully aware of the pain and inconvenience that accompany any disruption in healthcare services, and we deeply regret the situation.”

According to NARD, the strike is not politically motivated but aimed at ensuring the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the well-being of both medical professionals and patients.

The association listed its major demands, including fair remuneration, payment of outstanding arrears, improved working conditions, adequate staffing, and provision of essential medical infrastructure.

Suleiman noted that resident doctors are often overworked, underpaid, and mentally drained, which ultimately affects the quality of care delivered to patients.

“A nation’s health system can only be as strong as the hands that sustain it. If doctors are broken, under-motivated, or forced to seek survival abroad, the patients suffer most,” he added.

NARD called on Nigerians, including civil society groups, labour unions, religious and traditional leaders- to support their cause and urge the government to fulfil its commitments.

“This is not a fight between resident doctors and the government; it is a struggle for a functional, just, and humane healthcare system,” the statement said.

The association stressed that the strike would continue until the Federal Government meets its demands.

Meanwhile, the Abuja branch of NARD announced on Thursday that it would join the nationwide action, citing unmet local demands by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

NARD had earlier announced that the indefinite strike would begin on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
