the Peoples Democratic Party’s Reconciliation Committee, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has declared that the party must resolve the prolonged controversy surrounding its national secretary before it can convene a proper National Executive Committee meeting or hold a successful national convention.

In an interview on Arise Television Friday night, Saraki noted (as monitored by the webteam@ipledge2nigeria) that the unresolved dispute regarding the occupant of the national secretary position has been a significant obstacle to internal party cohesion.

He clarified that until the issue was dealt with, important meetings such as NEC, which set the party's course and electoral approach, would not be properly convened.

Saraki said, “This is a problem that has existed. Before we can have a smooth convention, we must first hold a NEC meeting, and before that, we need to agree on who our secretary is. The issue has lingered for ages and didn’t start today, but now, we must face it head-on.” He lamented that despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on March 21, 2025, which affirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic national secretary, the crisis has persisted due to entrenched positions among some party members.

He disclosed that a recent meeting involving the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission also contributed to clarifying the issue.

He stated, "Nine out of 10 attendees at that meeting accepted INEC's stance that, from its perspective, the party secretary is still Sam Anyanwu."

Saraki rejected the notion that the confusion stemmed from political motives, emphasizing that the party should now focus on unity rather than factional interests.

We have stated that there is no personal interest involved. Our only guidance comes from what is permissible according to the law.
