rnalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has suggested that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, may remain in custody until after the election, citing both legal and political factors surrounding his ongoing trial.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, Abati described the bail conditions imposed on El-Rufai as strict, noting that the court had refused to amend them despite concerns raised by the former governor.

According to Abati, one of the key bail requirements is for El-Rufai to provide a Level 17 official from the Federal Capital Territory as a surety, a condition he reportedly said he could not meet.

Abati explained that the case involves allegations including wiretapping and corruption, among other offences, and noted that the matter has been adjourned until September.

He said the circumstances surrounding the case suggest that more than legal considerations may be at play.

“The bail conditions are very stringent, but from the way I see it, there is also a political dimension to the matter,” Abati said.

He pointed out that the court has maintained its position on the bail terms and that El-Rufai has been unable to satisfy a major condition required for his release.

Abati added that while the case raises questions about politics, it is also a matter of accountability and responsibility under the law.

He stressed that the judiciary has the authority to determine bail conditions and that its decisions must be respected.

According to him, based on the current situation, El-Rufai is unlikely to regain his freedom before the election.

The former governor is facing multiple allegations, which he has denied, while legal proceedings in the case continue.
