A video circulating on social media has shown Islamic cleric Sheikh Murtala Bello Asada conducting a firearm shooting test in a forest following reports of threats to his life.

In the video, the cleric is seen firing a weapon in a wooded area, apparently as part of efforts to prepare himself for possible security threats.

The development comes amid reports that some individuals had allegedly threatened to kill the cleric.

Sheikh Asada also appeared to issue a strong warning to those he believed were behind the threats, saying: “To hell with them; damn them.”

The video, alongside photographs showing the cleric holding a double-barrel gun, has sparked mixed reactions on social media.

Some users criticised his decision to publicly demonstrate the use of a firearm, arguing that such actions could encourage the normalisation of gun ownership among civilians.

One Facebook user, Ayuba Hassan, wrote: “Very soon, everyone will be carrying a gun because of fear of being attacked.”

Others, however, defended the cleric, arguing that reported threats to his life could justify learning how to protect himself.

Nazifi M Aliyu II said the cleric was right to take measures to protect himself rather than wait until he was attacked.

Another user, Aminu Saidu Knaisa, also supported the move, describing self-defence as important.

However, Muhammad Iyadh questioned the decision, arguing that the cleric should rely on Allah rather than firearms and suggesting that the action raised questions about his understanding of Islamic teachings.

The incident has renewed discussions on personal security, civilian access to firearms and the responsibility of security agencies to protect citizens facing credible threats.
