the parent company of Snapchat, has announced the layoff of about 1,000 employees as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and improve profitability.

Chief Executive Officer Evan Spiegel said the decision was influenced by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, which are helping teams reduce repetitive tasks and work more efficiently. The restructuring affects roughly 16 percent of the company’s full-time workforce and includes the elimination of more than 300 vacant roles.

Spiegel noted that smaller teams using AI tools have already delivered meaningful progress across key projects, reinforcing the company’s shift toward a more technology-driven workflow.

The California-based firm expects the move to cut over $500 million in annual costs by the second half of the year, creating a clearer path toward achieving net profitability.

Snap joins a growing number of tech companies adjusting their workforce in response to AI-driven productivity gains, while also navigating stiff competition from platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

The company has undergone several rounds of layoffs in recent years as it seeks to stay competitive. Meanwhile, activist investor Irenic Capital Management, which recently acquired a 2.5 percent stake in Snap, has called for tighter cost controls and suggested discontinuing projects like its Spectacles smart glasses.

Following the announcement, Snap’s shares rose by over 7.5 percent, although the stock has yet to recover from earlier losses recorded this year.

According to Layoffs.fyi, more than 72,000 workers have been laid off by nearly 90 tech firms globally so far in 2026, highlighting a broader trend of restructuring across the industry.
