The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has issued a fresh 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay outstanding arrears under its 2026 agreement with the union or face an indefinite strike.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced the decision in Abuja while presenting resolutions from the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over the weekend.

Ibrahim said the 2026 agreement provided clear measures for resolving outstanding issues affecting members, but its implementation had been inconsistent across universities.

He accused the government of paying the arrears selectively and in a haphazard manner, warning that SSANU would no longer accept further delays.

The ultimatum followed an earlier warning issued by the union last Thursday over what it described as delays in implementing the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.

The union said it would not accept “unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalisation or any attempt to diminish” the financial and non-financial provisions of the agreement.

According to Ibrahim, implementation has started in some universities but remains incomplete in others due to funding and administrative challenges.

He stressed that the agreement must result in tangible benefits for university workers.

“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” he said.

The SSANU president directed the union’s branches and zones nationwide to monitor implementation closely, keep accurate membership records, document cases of non-compliance or victimisation, and submit regular reports to the national secretariat.

The union warned that failure by the Federal Government to meet its demands within the 14-day period could lead to an indefinite strike.
