The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board has confirmed the killing of a teacher and the abduction of several pupils, students, and staff members following an attack on schools in the Ahoro-Esinele community of Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State.

The attack reportedly occurred on Friday morning, May 15, targeting LA School and Community Grammar School located within the area.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, described the attack as painful and tragic, noting that the exact number of abducted pupils had yet to be determined as security agencies continue rescue operations.

According to the board, the incident has thrown the education sector in the state into mourning.

As part of precautionary measures, OYOSUBEB directed all primary schools in neighbouring local government areas including Surulere, Oyo East, Oriire, and Olorunsogo to shut down immediately until further notice.

The board assured parents and residents that the safety of children remains a top priority and stated that security agencies are actively working to rescue the victims and restore peace to the affected communities.

The statement added that tactical response teams and intelligence operations had already been deployed under the coordination of the Commissioner of Police to track down the attackers.

Also confirming the attack, the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the assailants operated on motorcycles and simultaneously attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota as well as Community Grammar School and LA Primary School in Esiele.

According to preliminary police investigations, the attackers abducted several pupils, students, staff members, and the Vice Principal, Mrs Alamu Folawe.

The police spokesperson stated that no pupil or student had been confirmed killed as of the latest update. However, an assistant headmaster identified as Mr Adesiyan reportedly lost his life during the attack.

Olayinka also revealed that a commercial motorcyclist was shot dead after allegedly resisting attempts by the gunmen to seize his motorcycle.

Police further disclosed that the attackers fled with a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted Vice Principal before later setting the vehicle ablaze along a road leading into the forest.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reportedly led security operatives and other service commanders to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and operational coordination.

Authorities say tactical teams, intelligence units, and operational assets have since been deployed across the affected communities to intensify rescue efforts, prevent further attacks, and apprehend those responsible for the assault.
