In Lagos, traffic is not an obstacle. It is the city.

3:47pm. Third Mainland Bridge.

The cars have stopped pretending to move. Windows down. Afrobeats from a Corolla. Suya smoke from the median. A boy in a yellow vest sells Gala, Gala.

No one is honking. Not really.

This is not delay. This is life happening.

THE SECOND OFFICE

Ask a Lagosian where they work. They will name a company.

Ask them where they live. They will name a second.

The car is the space in between.

It is where deals are closed on AirPods. Where voice notes are recorded in traffic from Lekki to Ikeja. Where a silk headwrap is adjusted in the rearview and a blazer is steamed by AC.

A 2008 Camry with tinted windows is not transport. It is real estate.

It has a charger, a perfume, a stash of cash for "agbero." It has playlists curated for the exact length of time it takes to get from Victoria Island to Yaba on a Friday.

We do not endure traffic. We furnish it.

In other cities, speed is power. In Lagos, stillness is.

The BRT lane moves, and everyone watches. The bike man weaves, and everyone envies and judges him. The man in the G-Wagon with a driver sleeps in the back while the rest calculate fuel.

Traffic flattens everyone for a moment. CEO and intern. Afrobeats star and banker. All of us on the same stretch of Eko Bridge, listening to the same radio host complain about the same pothole.

Then the lane opens. And hierarchy returns.

The person with the bigger engine, the bolder driver, the better bribe, moves first.

This is why we talk about traffic the way people in Paris talk about art. It reveals

The rest of the world runs on minutes. Lagos runs on "I’m around."

"I’m around" means I have left.

"I’m around" means I am somewhere between Maryland and Ojuelegba.

"I’m around" means do not ask me again.

Punctuality was never a virtue here. Stamina was.

The ability to sit for two hours and still show up to a dinner in Ikoyi with fresh gloss and no resentment. That is a skill.

This is why Lagos parties start at 10pm. This is why 7pm meetings are a fantasy. The city negotiated with time and won.

We did not lose hours in traffic. We traded them. For podcasts. For phone calls to aunties. For the kind of thinking you cannot do in an open-plan office.

THE AESTHETIC OF GRIDLOCK

Look closely.

The danfo painted with Tiwa Savage and a Bible verse. The dispatch rider with Jumia and chicken in the same box. The woman selling plantain chips who knows every car by tint. The billboard for a bank that promises "No Traffic To Your Dreams."

There is choreography here. Conductors whistling. LASTMA raising one hand. Okada men negotiating gaps that do not exist.

It is ugly. It is also beautiful.

Like a Basquiat. Chaotic, layered, and entirely intentional if you know how to read it.

Foreigners call it chaos. We call it rhythm.

WHAT WE DO WITH IT

Traffic has made Lagos softer and harder at the same time.

Softer, because you learn to share water, to borrow power bank, to laugh at a man selling air freshener while you are both not moving.

Harder, because you learn that leaving the house is a decision with consequences. That distance is expensive. That proximity is privilege.

This is why Ikoyi costs what it costs. Not for the view. For the 20 minutes saved.

The new flex is not the car. It is the address 15 minutes from work.

The new luxury is not leather seats. It is working from home on Tuesdays.

THE LAST LANE

At night, the bridge is different.

The heat lifts. The lagoon is black and flat. The cars move, finally, in one clean line. Brake lights red like lipstick.

Someone will still be selling cold water. Someone will still be on a call saying "I’m almost there."

Lagos does not hate traffic.

Lagos became Lagos inside traffic.

The question is not how we end it.

The question is who we would be without it.

THE LOVE AFFAIR WITH GO-SLOW IN LAGOS.
