At least three people were reportedly killed and several others injured after suspected armed herdsmen attacked Abaushwa community in Ndzorov Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.

The attack reportedly occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Monday when the assailants invaded the community, located near Gbajimba, the headquarters of Guma LGA, and opened fire on residents.

A security source said the attackers shot indiscriminately, forcing terrified residents to flee for safety.

Among those reportedly killed were a father and two of his children—a son and a daughter—who lost their lives during the assault.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Guma Local Government Council, Hon. Maurice Orwough, condemned the attack, describing the killings as tragic and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Tuesday through his Personal Assistant on Communication and Strategy, Ernest Tortiv, Orwough said the attack claimed innocent lives, left several others injured, and caused widespread fear and destruction in the community.

He expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

The council chairman also disclosed that security personnel had been deployed to the affected community to restore calm, protect lives and property, and prevent further attacks.

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could help address the security challenges in the area.

As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.

When contacted, the command's spokesperson, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, said he would respond to enquiries but had yet to provide an update.
