President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of former leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Ralph Obioha.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Obioha as a patriot who played an important role in Nigeria’s struggle to restore democracy.

Obioha was a statesman, former lawmaker, businessman and prominent figure in the country’s pro-democracy movement.

The President extended his condolences to Obioha’s family, community, the people of Abia State, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, members of NADECO and all Nigerians mourning his death.

Tinubu said Obioha belonged to a generation of Nigerians who responded to the call to defend democratic principles during some of the country’s most difficult periods.

He recalled that as a founding member and prominent leader of NADECO, Obioha stood firmly in support of democratic governance following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

According to Tinubu, Obioha remained committed to democracy, justice, constitutionalism and the right of Nigerians to choose their leaders, despite the personal sacrifices and challenges he faced during the struggle.

The President said the contributions of those who fought for democracy during difficult periods of Nigeria’s history should not be forgotten.

He described Obioha as a courageous Nigerian who sacrificed for democracy and remained committed to building a better country.

Tinubu said Obioha’s death was a loss to his family, community and the nation, adding that he would be remembered for his courage, convictions, service and belief in Nigeria.

“On behalf of the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. I pray that Almighty God grants them comfort and gives eternal rest to the soul of Chief Ralph Obioha,” Tinubu said.

The President prayed that Obioha’s memory would continue to remind Nigerians of the courage, sacrifice and commitment required to build a strong nation.
