A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to weaken and eliminate opposition political forces in Nigeria.

Momodu made the allegation in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he urged Nigerians to set aside party differences and unite in defence of democracy.

According to the former presidential aspirant, the current administration is allegedly linked to some of the internal crises affecting opposition parties across the country.

He argued that the ongoing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot simply be blamed on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as some commentators have suggested.

Momodu also claimed that the influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, particularly within the judiciary and government circles, has made it difficult for the PDP to take disciplinary action against him.

The media entrepreneur pointed out that Peter Obi left the PDP before the party’s presidential primary, questioning why Atiku should be blamed for the party’s subsequent challenges.

He further noted that the PDP opted to conduct an open presidential primary, a decision he said was largely influenced by Wike’s political camp. According to Momodu, Wike contested the primary but lost, insisting that the outcome should not be attributed to Atiku.

Momodu added that Wike had initially lobbied to become Atiku’s running mate but was unsuccessful and later chose to support Tinubu during the election.

He also questioned whether there was any certainty that a PDP ticket involving Atiku, Obi, or Wike would have defeated Tinubu in the election.

According to him, Nigeria’s Constitution allows every citizen the right to pursue their political ambitions, making attempts to suppress Atiku’s aspirations unjustified.

Momodu also dismissed claims that Atiku was responsible for the crises within other opposition parties such as the Labour Party (Nigeria) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

He warned that Nigeria risks sliding into authoritarian rule if citizens fail to unite across political lines to defend opposition voices.

Momodu concluded that the current administration appears unwilling to tolerate opposition and may deploy every available tool of power to weaken or eliminate it if Nigerians do not resist collectively.
