United States President Donald Trump has dismissed Iran’s latest diplomatic proposal concerning its nuclear programme, describing the opening section of the document as unacceptable.

Speaking to reporters at Beijing Capital International Airport on Friday, May 15, before boarding Air Force One, Trump claimed that Iran had retreated from earlier commitments regarding its nuclear activities.

According to the president, the proposal failed to meet his administration’s core demand for a complete halt to all forms of nuclear development.

Trump stated that once a proposal allows Iran to retain any form of nuclear capability, he loses interest in considering the remainder of the document.

He also criticised what he described as insufficient guarantees from Tehran, alleging that Iranian officials had previously indicated willingness to surrender their enriched uranium stockpile before later reversing their position.

Despite his criticism, Trump expressed confidence that a future agreement could still be reached, suggesting that Iran’s leadership may eventually accept the conditions set by the United States.

Meanwhile, Abbas Araghchi reportedly clarified that uranium enrichment is not currently part of the active negotiation agenda.

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Araghchi stated that the issue of enrichment would likely be addressed during later phases of discussions. However, he stressed that Iran remains unwilling to give up its existing uranium stockpile, while continuing to insist that it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons.

The discussions also touched on tensions surrounding the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. When asked whether Chinese President Xi Jinping would pressure Iran to reopen the waterway, Trump responded that the United States does not require “favours” but hinted at possible further action, referring to potential “cleanup work.”

Trump further linked the current month-long ceasefire in the region to what he described as the effectiveness of the American blockade and hinted that military operations could resume in the future.

His remarks followed an earlier social media post in which he wrote that his campaign was “to be continued.”
