A 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Abolarin Tomisin, and seven other victims abducted while returning from a national conference in Imo State have regained their freedom after spending 22 days in captivity.

The President of the University of Ibadan Students' Union, Temidayo Adeboye, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, July 6, saying the victims' release had been officially verified by the relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation involved.

According to Adeboye, the freed victims are currently undergoing post-release procedures before returning to their respective destinations.

"We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon," he said.

He commended the efforts of security agencies, the university management, the leadership of the Scripture Union, and everyone who played a role in securing the victims' release.

The Students' Union also expressed appreciation to members of the university community for their prayers, patience, solidarity and unwavering support throughout the student's captivity.

"As we celebrate this welcome news, we remain grateful to God and pray for the complete healing, restoration and well-being of everyone affected," the statement added.

The victims, including the Director-General of Scripture Union Nigeria, Uwem Cosmas, were abducted on June 14, 2026, along the Imo-Anambra boundary while returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.

Adeboye had earlier revealed that Tomisin was travelling with Uwem Cosmas and other conference participants when the kidnappers struck.

He also clarified that Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship and Vice-President of the University of Ibadan chapter, was the only UI student among those abducted, contrary to reports circulating on social media.

A video shared after their release showed emotional scenes of praise, worship and thanksgiving as the freed victims joined fellow believers in expressing gratitude to God for preserving their lives throughout the 22-day ordeal.
