The body of a Nigerian doctor who was reported missing in the United States has been recovered from a lake in Ohio.

Dr. Cletus Iwuagwu, 71, was last seen on November 24, 2025, in Holland, Ohio. According to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, his body was discovered in Orchard Lake near the Stone Oak Country Club on Thursday, December 25, 2025.

The coroner’s office said deputies from the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office located the body, while the Springfield Fire Department later retrieved it from the water.

Family members reported Dr. Iwuagwu missing on November 25 after he failed to return home. He was last seen around 8 p.m. on November 24 at his office.

Authorities revealed that Dr. Iwuagwu’s daughter had been receiving location updates on her phone linked to her father’s movements, but searches of those locations yielded no results.

At the time he went missing, Dr. Iwuagwu was reportedly wearing a white shirt and blue clothing, according to information provided by his family.

The coroner’s office stated that the cause and manner of death remain under investigation, although there is currently no suspicion of foul play. An autopsy is scheduled to be carried out on Friday, December 26.

Dr. Iwuagwu was a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toledo’s College of Medicine and Life Sciences, as well as a geriatric medicine physician with UToledo Health.

Following his disappearance, a spokesperson for the University of Toledo Medical Center described him as a highly respected physician and expressed hope for his safe return while investigations were ongoing.
