The United States and Israel have carried out coordinated military strikes against Iran, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions and fuelling fears of a broader Middle East war.

Israeli authorities said the operation commenced early Saturday local time, describing it as a large-scale pre-emptive assault aimed at Iranian military installations and strategic assets. Blasts were reported in Tehran and parts of western Iran, with smoke seen rising from sections of the capital.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the action was intended to eliminate what he called an existential threat tied to Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes. Defence Minister Israel Katz similarly characterized the offensive as a necessary defensive measure.

In Washington, President Donald Trump confirmed U.S. involvement, describing the campaign as “major combat operations.” According to American officials, the strikes followed months of joint planning with Israel and could continue in the coming days. The objective, they said, is to degrade Iran’s military capacity and counter threats to U.S. and allied interests.

Iran Retaliates

Tehran responded by launching missile and drone attacks toward Israeli territory. Air-raid sirens sounded across several Israeli cities as defense systems intercepted incoming projectiles. Israeli authorities declared a state of emergency and shut down national airspace.

Iran also widened its response by targeting U.S. military positions in the Gulf region. Missiles were reportedly fired toward Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and toward American-linked facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Interceptions were reported in multiple areas, while emergency alerts were issued to U.S. personnel and civilians.

Iranian officials warned that further retaliation would follow if attacks on its territory persist.

The latest confrontation represents the most direct military clash in years between Iran and the U.S.–Israel alliance. It follows a prolonged period of indirect hostilities, including cyber operations, proxy conflicts, and disputes surrounding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

Airspace closures remain in place across both Iran and Israel, while neighboring states have heightened security amid concerns that the crisis could spiral into a wider regional conflict.
