States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has clarified that the newly announced U.S. visa restrictions are not aimed specifically at Nigerians but are intended to enhance security measures.

Mr Mills clarified on Sunday, December 21, while addressing journalists at a press conference in Abuja. He explained that the presidential proclamation, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026, affects certain visa categories and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen U.S. border security and safeguard American communities.

According to the ambassador, the ongoing visa review focuses on improving screening and vetting processes, as well as ensuring access to reliable information during visa applications, rather than punishing Nigerian travellers.

“The emphasis is on proper vetting and credible information in the visa process. It is not about targeting Nigerians,” Mills said.

He noted that the proclamation clearly outlines the visa categories that may be impacted and also provides exemptions for specific groups. These exemptions, he said, include holders of diplomatic and official passports, as well as individuals travelling to the United States for religious purposes.

Mr Mills advised visa applicants and members of the public to visit the official website of the U.S. Embassy for comprehensive details on affected visa categories and applicable exemptions.

It would be recalled that President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, December 16, signed a proclamation imposing additional entry restrictions on nationals of countries classified as high-risk due to what the White House described as ongoing shortcomings in screening, vetting, and information-sharing processes that pose threats to national security and public safety.

Nigeria is among the 15 countries placed under partial entry restrictions.
