The road to Erin-Ijesha ends where tar gives up. Red dust. Motorbikes. A woman selling pure water and gala from a cooler.

Above, something is moving. Not traffic. Water.

You hear it before you see it. A low, constant argument between rock and river.

THE SEVEN ARGUMENTS

Erin-Ijesha in Osun has seven levels. Tour guides will tell you this like they’re counting floors in a hotel.

They are not. They are stages.

At level one, children in Ankara swim shorts and borrowed Crocs. At level four, the water turns cold and serious. By level seven, you are alone with mist and the kind of quiet that makes Lagos feel like a rumor.

Farther north, Gurara in Niger falls 30 meters with no apologies. In the dry season it sulks. In August it roars and takes the bridge with it. Assop in Plateau is smaller, softer, the kind of place people go to propose and to hide. Agbokim in Cross River comes down in seven streams at once, like fabric tearing.

None of them are curated. That is the difference.

The global luxury conversation is about access. Private islands. Booked-out resorts. A waterfall in Switzerland comes with a spa and a dress code.

Nigeria’s waterfalls come with potholes.

There is no valet at Erin-Ijesha. No QR code. You climb barefoot because your Havaianas will not survive the rocks. A local boy will offer to carry your bag for ₦500 and will also tell you which stone is slippery. That is the concierge.

This is not a failure of tourism. It is a refusal.

The beauty here is not packaged. It cannot be. To package it would require taming it, and taming it would make it lie.

WATER AS MEMORY

Waterfalls in Nigeria are not scenery. They are archives.

Elders in Ijeshaland will tell you Erin-Ijesha was discovered by a hunter and his wife in 1140. That the water was for gods before it was for selfies. That certain levels are for prayer, not swimming.

In Cross River, Agbokim marks borders older than the state lines. In Plateau, Assop fed tin miners and their stories.

This is why the water feels heavy. It has been watched. It has been used for oaths, for washing, for deciding who gets to pass.

To stand under it is to stand in a place that already had meaning before you arrived with your iPhone 15 and your linen set from Studio 189.

THE NEW PILGRIMAGE

Something has shifted.

Five years ago, the conversation was Dubai for December. Now it is Obudu in December. Now it is driving six hours from Abuja to Gurara because the dollar is rude and because boredom with luxury is a luxury itself.

Young Nigerians are not looking for escape. They are looking for proof. Proof that beauty exists here without a visa. Proof that "abroad" is not the only place with grandeur.

The uniform is changing too. Not heels. Not resort wear. Quick-dry shorts, a white singlet, a knitted bucket hat from Yaba Market. Skin glistening. No filter. The status symbol is no longer the destination. It is the willingness to get there.

WHAT THE WATER KEEPS

Stand at the base of any of them in the afternoon. The sun cuts through the trees in bars. The air smells like wet stone and mango.

The water does not ask you to buy anything. It does not ask you to post. It simply falls, as it has, through coups and currency changes and every version of this country.

We spend so much time arguing about Nigeria.

The waterfalls do not argue. They just keep moving down.

And maybe that is the most radical thing about them.
