Recently, Nigerians once again poured out in protest driven by frustration over the economy, insecurity, the rising cost of living, and what many describe as a growing disconnect between leaders and the led. What made this particular protest even more significant was the presence of a familiar political figure among the crowd: Peter Obi.

The demonstrations were not born in a vacuum. Across the country, hardship has become a daily reality. Food prices continue to stretch household budgets. Transport fares rise unpredictably. Small businesses struggle to breathe under the weight of inflation and unstable policies. For many citizens, protest has become less about politics and more about survival. Our democracy guarantees freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. That right is fundamental. At the same time, peaceful protest must remain peaceful. Destruction of property, incitement, or violence undermines the very message protesters seek to send. A protest rooted in dignity carries more moral authority than one that descends into chaos.

Peter Obi’s participation, regardless of interpretation, reflects a broader reality: politics in Nigeria is no longer confined to podiums and campaign seasons. Whether this strengthens democratic engagement or intensifies political polarization depends on how responsibly all parties conduct themselves.

For the federal government, protests are not merely opposition noise; they are feedback. A wise government studies protest as carefully as it studies policy reports. Dismissing citizens’ frustrations outright risks widening the trust gap. At the same time, opposition figures must ensure that their involvement promotes constructive dialogue rather than deepening divisions.
