There are moments in a nation’s life when events force citizens to pause, not in outrage but in reflection. This past week has been one of those moments. News emerged that Nigerian troops were swiftly deployed beyond our borders in response to regional tensions. The operation was efficient, decisive, and timely. It showed coordination. It showed readiness. It showed capacity.

And in showing all these things, it quietly raised a question many Nigerians have been carrying in their hearts for years.

At home, insecurity has become a constant companion. Villages in the North and Middle Belt have been emptied by fear. Farmers hesitate before stepping onto their land. Schools have been shut, not because learning has ended, but because safety can no longer be guaranteed. Highways once travelled with confidence now demand prayers before every journey. Families wait, sometimes for days, sometimes forever, for loved ones taken by bandits or lost to violence.

In these moments, Nigerians have often been told that security operations take time. That intelligence must be gathered. That logistics must be arranged. That conditions must be right.

So when Nigerians see swift action elsewhere, the reaction is not anger, it is confusion. If speed and coordination are possible, then the question becomes less about ability and more about urgency. Less about capacity and more about priority.

This is not to suggest that Nigeria should withdraw from regional responsibilities. Our country has long played a stabilizing role in West Africa, and that role has earned respect. Peace in neighbouring countries matters. Regional stability matters. Diplomacy matters.

But so does the safety of Nigerians in their homes.

A nation’s strength is not measured only by how far its influence reaches, but by how securely its citizens sleep at night. When people feel protected, they cooperate. When they feel abandoned, trust begins to erode. And trust, once broken, is far harder to rebuild than infrastructure or institutions.

What Nigerians seem to be asking quietly, patiently, persistently, is simple: can the same urgency shown abroad be felt at home? Can the same resolve applied elsewhere be seen in communities plagued by fear? Can the promise of protection extend equally to villages, highways, schools, and farms within our borders?

These are not questions of loyalty or patriotism. They are questions of belonging. Of assurance. Of the social contract between the state and its people.

History shows that nations grow stronger when their citizens believe their lives matter. When protection is not selective. When leadership listens not only to international expectations, but to the silent cries within its own borders.
