There is something remarkable happening in Katsina, a state often discussed in the national media through the lenses of insecurity, politics, or economic challenges. For five consecutive years, another story has quietly been unfolding, one written not with headlines of conflict but with books, poetry, paintings, conversations, music, and the unwavering belief that culture remains one of humanity's greatest instruments for preserving identity and shaping the future.

The fifth edition of the Katsina Book and Arts Festival (KBAF), organised by the Pleasant Library and Book Club, was more than an anniversary celebration. It was a declaration that literature and the arts continue to matter in a world increasingly dominated by algorithms, short attention spans, and rapidly evolving technology.

Since its establishment in 2019, the festival has steadily grown into one of Northern Nigeria's most significant literary and cultural gatherings, creating a platform where writers, artists, educators, students, policymakers, and lovers of culture meet not simply to celebrate creativity, but to interrogate ideas, preserve heritage, and inspire new generations.

This year's theme, "AI, Storytelling and the Future of Creativity," could hardly have been more timely.

Artificial Intelligence has become one of the defining conversations of our generation. Around the world, questions are being asked about whether machines will eventually replace writers, artists, designers, filmmakers, teachers, and even human imagination itself. Rather than avoiding these difficult conversations, the Katsina Book and Arts Festival placed them at the very centre of its programme.

The festival brought together an impressive lineup of respected voices including Ismaila Bala, Ado Ahmad Gidan Dabino, Dr. Dikko Muhammad, Fatima Abba Gana, Salim Yunusa of Poetic Wednesdays, Umar Abdullahi, Majeed Danbaba, Kabir Umar, Maryam Abbas, Kabir Saidu Bahaushe, Fatima Adamu, and Professor Aliyu Nasir Kankara. Each contributed unique perspectives on how technology is transforming creativity while reaffirming that storytelling remains deeply human.

What made the gathering particularly significant was its ability to attract participants from beyond the literary community. Traditional leaders, lawmakers, jurists, academics, public officials, and development stakeholders also participated, including the Maradin Katsina, Arc. Mansur Ahmadu Kurfi, Hon. Aliyu Abubakar Albaba, Justice Musa Danladi, Associate Professor Mukhtar El-Kasim, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, and SA Umar Kutawa. Their presence reflected a growing recognition that literature and the creative industries are no longer peripheral to national development. They are increasingly central to conversations around education, culture, youth engagement, innovation, and economic growth.

Throughout the festival, participants engaged in rich panel discussions, book readings, author conversations, poetry performances, music, and art exhibitions. One of the major highlights was the inaugural Labo Yari Poetry Slam, sponsored by DC Tasi'u Sunusi Saulawa in honour of Malam Labo Yari, one of Nigeria's pioneering writers and a founding member of the Association of Nigerian Authors. The competition celebrated the enduring power of poetry as both artistic expression and social commentary, while introducing younger generations to one of Northern Nigeria's literary giants.

Beyond the events themselves, the festival tells a larger story about Katsina.

For decades, Northern Nigeria has produced some of Africa's finest storytellers, scholars, historians, and intellectuals. From Abubakar Imam to Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, from Hausa oral traditions preserved by griots to contemporary novelists and poets, the region has always possessed a rich literary heritage. Festivals like KBAF ensure that this tradition is not merely remembered but continuously renewed.

They also serve another important purpose.

They create safe spaces where young people can imagine different futures for themselves. A student attending a poetry performance today may become tomorrow's novelist. A young girl listening to an author discuss publishing may discover that her own stories deserve to be written. An aspiring artist exhibiting work for the first time may eventually build a career capable of creating jobs for others.

This is why literary festivals matter.

They are not simply gatherings for intellectuals.

They are investments in imagination.

Around the world, cities increasingly recognise that books, arts, culture, and creative industries contribute significantly to economic growth, tourism, education, and social cohesion. Nigeria's own creative economy continues to expand through literature, film, music, visual arts, publishing, and digital content creation, creating opportunities that extend far beyond entertainment.

At a time when conversations around Artificial Intelligence often focus on replacement, the Katsina Book and Arts Festival offered a more balanced perspective. Technology may transform how stories are created, shared, translated, and preserved, but the human experiences that inspire those stories remain uniquely ours. Machines can generate words, but they cannot inherit memories. They cannot carry culture in the way communities do. They cannot replace lived experience, emotion, history, or identity.

Perhaps that is the enduring lesson from Katsina.

Civilisations are remembered not only for the wars they fought or the governments they elected, but for the stories they chose to preserve and the generations they inspired to keep telling them.
