Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu personally invited him on several occasions to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Mutfwang made the revelation on Thursday shortly after officially joining the APC, explaining that his decision followed months of consultations and deep personal reflection, undertaken in the overall interest of Plateau State.

He stressed that his defection was not motivated by personal ambition but was borne out of respect for President Tinubu, whom he said has shown consistent interest in the development and challenges of Plateau State.

According to the governor, despite repeated invitations from the President and appeals from influential political figures, including APC governors, he initially declined and remained loyal to the PDP.

“I pay my respects to President Tinubu for respecting our earlier decision not to move to the APC and for maintaining a cordial relationship with us despite that,” Mutfwang said during a meeting with political appointees and stakeholders at the Government House in Jos.

He explained that his stance only changed after the persistent crisis within the PDP at the national level worsened, making it difficult for the party to function effectively.

“Until recently, we believed the idea of leaving the PDP had been laid to rest. At the state level, we have no issues, but without a functional national structure, all our efforts are undermined,” he said.

Mutfwang noted that remaining in the PDP posed significant political risks, which he said were too great to gamble with the mandate entrusted to him by the people of Plateau State.

“The uncertainty surrounding the PDP crisis makes it impossible to predict when or how it will end. Given the painful experiences our people have endured in the past, we cannot afford to subject them to another round of emotional distress,” he added.

The governor further stated that while he could have joined any political party, experience had taught him that winning elections is one thing, but ensuring that votes count is another.

Although he acknowledged past disagreements with the Plateau APC, Mutfwang said the Tinubu-led administration had treated his government with fairness and goodwill.

“Since the President did not pressure us to join the APC before the PDP crisis deepened, it was only reasonable to consider the invitation. Joining the APC presents opportunities for Plateau State in terms of appointments, support, and development,” he said.

He concluded by hinting at positive developments for the state, urging residents to remain hopeful. “There is good news coming soon. Stay tuned,” he added.
