Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has explained why he did not seek the position of Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign, saying he is not a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and would not risk losing Rivers State.

Wike spoke on Saturday after inspecting the Apo-Karshi and Kubwa-Bwari roads in Abuja.

His comments came shortly after the Presidency announced former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.

Wike said political relevance is not determined by the position a politician holds in a campaign but by their ability to deliver victory in their state.

He recalled that some politicians who previously served as campaign directors-general went on to lose their home states.

According to him, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi lost Rivers State while serving as Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign DG, while former Senate President Bukola Saraki lost Kwara State and his Senate seat after leading Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 campaign.

Wike also cited former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, saying they both lost their states after serving as campaign directors-general during the 2023 elections.

The FCT minister said he was unwilling to take such a risk, stressing that his priority is to help deliver victory for Tinubu in both the FCT and Rivers State.

“I am not a member of APC. So the issue of their Presidential Campaign Council is out of the question,” Wike said.

He, however, reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s re-election, noting that he supported the President in 2023 despite not being a member of the APC.

Wike said his current support is being coordinated through what he called a “Rainbow Coalition” — a cross-party alliance of politicians working for Tinubu’s re-election while remaining members of their respective political parties.

He said the coalition is already active in states including Kwara, Bayelsa, Rivers, Osun and Benue.
