In many conversations around advocacy and social development in Nigeria, attention has often focused, understandably, on the protection and empowerment of girls and women. Over the years, these conversations have helped spotlight important issues around education, equality, health, and opportunity.

But quietly, another conversation has been growing.

A conversation around the emotional, social, and developmental realities facing boys in today’s society.

That conversation came alive once again as the Yargote Foundation marked the 2026 International Day of the Boy Child with activities across multiple locations including Abuja, Suleja, Port Harcourt, and Ilorin. The foundation’s growing nationwide visibility reflects an increasing recognition that supporting boys is also critical to building stable families and healthier communities.

What stood out this year was not just the scale of the outreach, but the intentionality behind it.

Through road walks, mentorship engagements, advocacy campaigns, and community participation, the foundation pushed a message many Nigerians are beginning to pay closer attention to: boys also need guidance, emotional support, mentorship, and safe spaces to grow.

The road walk held to commemorate the International Day of the Boy Child became one of the symbolic highlights of the campaign. Participants from different backgrounds gathered not merely for visibility, but for awareness. Parents, educators, students, youth advocates, and community members walked together around a shared concern, the future of young boys navigating a rapidly changing society.

Globally, conversations around the boy child have become increasingly important. The International Day of the Boy Child, observed every May 16, was created to highlight challenges affecting boys while also promoting positive masculinity, mentorship, education, and emotional wellbeing.

In Nigeria, these concerns are particularly significant. Many young boys are growing up in environments shaped by economic hardship, insecurity, broken homes, social pressure, substance abuse, cybercrime influence, and limited mentorship structures. While society often expects boys to “figure life out,” many silently struggle with emotional and social pressures they are rarely encouraged to discuss openly.

This is part of what makes advocacy around the boy child important. The conversation is not about competing with the girl child. Rather, it is about balance. It is about ensuring that while society continues empowering girls, boys are not left emotionally neglected or socially directionless in the process.

The Yargote Foundation has consistently framed its work around this balance. Founded by Anna Hussaini Pai, the organization focuses on mentorship, resilience-building, emotional wellbeing, leadership development, and responsible citizenship for young boys.

Their programs aim to equip boys not only academically, but socially and mentally, teaching values such as empathy, responsibility, confidence, discipline, and respect. This matters because the quality of boys raised today directly affects the quality of men society will produce tomorrow.

A society that ignores the emotional development of boys often ends up dealing with the consequences later through violence, crime, broken families, addiction, and social instability. Boys who grow without mentorship frequently seek identity from the streets, harmful online spaces, or unhealthy peer pressure.

That is why initiatives like these are gradually gaining wider support.

Beyond advocacy, there is also an economic dimension to the conversation.

A generation of disciplined, emotionally stable, educated, and purpose-driven young men contributes positively to national productivity and community stability. Nations grow not only through infrastructure and policy, but through human development. When young people are properly guided, societies become safer, workforces become stronger, and communities become healthier.
